From mouthwatering street food like puchka (pani puri) and kathi rolls to delectable Bengali sweets like rasgulla and sandesh, the city’s gastronomic offerings are a treat for food enthusiasts. Not to mention the blend of Indian and Chinese food known as Indo-Chinese.

4. Passionate People
Despite its bustling nature, Calcutta’s warm and welcoming residents, known as “Kolkatans,” are known for their intellectual curiosity, love for literature, and passion for art. Their enthusiasm for intellectual debates, music, and theater can be experienced in the numerous coffee houses, bookstores, and cultural centers that dot the city. Ask one person for directions, and watch five people passionately break out into a fight on who’s right. They are proud of where they come from. The diversity in Calcutta is truly unparalleled.
If given the chance, The Culture Kaleidoscope Walking Tour will showcase how much religious solidatrity exists in this “Jewel In the Crown”. From Chinese Buddhists, Muslims, Christians and at one point a few thousand Jewish people. There remains a synagogue that is historically preserved as a reminder of the Jewish population that resided there. Since there aren’t any Jewish people left to light candles for Sabbath, the Muslims in the area light the candles outside instead, marking true spiritual solidarity regardless of spiritual practice. This melting pot will allow you to feel at home immediately regardless of where you’re from.
